"A person who wishes to have an agricultural product certified as an organic product shall apply in writing to a certification body […] a report setting out in detail the methods of production used in the production of the agricultural product and the control mechanisms in place to ensure that those methods comply at all times with the standards set out in the most recent edition of CAN/CGSB 32.310, entitled Organic Production Systems – General Principles and Management Standards." Section 8 of the Organic Products Regulations

CAN/CGSB 32.310, which is the reference standard in the Organic Products Regulations, is known as the National Standard of Canada for Organic Agriculture.

The National Standard of Canada for Organic Agriculture has broad scope, as it regulates all farming, livestock farming and processing practices used to produce organic products. Producers will be able to find answers in this document to all their questions.

The National Standard of Canada will have to be comparable to the standards of trading partners who sell organic products on the international market. Comparison tables have thus been established with the standards of the European Union, United States and Japan, as well as the standards of Codex Alimentarius Commission, in order to ensure the unimpeded trade of Canadian organic products on the international market.
